The black bird came down onto the gatepost the morning after the barn burned, and it did not look like anything that should have survived a fire. Its wings were fanned out wide as a rake of spoons, every feather edged in a line so sharp the frost could not settle on it. My father swore at it from the yard. I went to the gate with the bucket still in my hand and watched its tail unroll down the post and curl into the snow like a fern made of ink.

Grandmother had told me the old story at the kitchen range, the one about the bird that lies down in its own ashes each winter and gets up again when the thaw comes. I had thought it was the sort of thing grown women say to children who have lost a pony in a fire. But the ash under the gatepost was grey and wet, and where the bird's tail touched it, the ash went black in tidy scrolls, as if someone had drawn there with a steady hand.
Father did not believe it either. He spent three days shovelling the charred beams into the midden, cursing the cold and the insurance man, and he did not once look up at the post. On the fourth morning the post was empty and the snow lay pressed flat in a long, looping trail that ran out across the top field and stopped at the frozen beck.
I found a single feather there, long as my forearm and as black as wet slate. I took it home and pushed it into the frame of the kitchen window, where the low light comes through the glass. By March the top field had gone green in a ring exactly the shape of that trail, and Father, who had sworn at everything that winter, stood in the gap of the hedge and said nothing at all.
