Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised phoenix in profile, facing left, with a long curved beak, a swept crest and wings made of sharp, tapering feather shapes. The design is built from solid black shapes with no shading or grey tones, and the tail feathers trail down the left side of the frame. It is shown as a standalone drawing on a plain white background.

Nell had been shovelling the back step of the Crook Inn for an hour when the bird came down the lane. She took it at first for a rag caught in the drift, then for a crow, until it tore out of the white and landed on the pump handle as though it had paid for the room. Its beak curled long and sharp as a sickle. Its crest swept back like a flame caught in a draught. The road to Hexham had been buried since Tuesday, and nobody was coming up the fell in this weather, so she stood with the shovel and waited for it to decide what it wanted.

Her father appeared in the doorway with a tea towel over his shoulder and didn't look surprised. He only said, "You'll be wanting the coals, then," and went back inside. Nell found the old guest book on the shelf above the till, where a landlady two generations gone had drawn this same bird in pen, with a note beneath it in faded copper ink: feed it when the snow is deepest, or it will feed itself on the roof. Nell carried a shovel of embers across the yard. The bird lowered its head, took a coal in its beak, and its wings opened so wide the feather tips brushed both walls of the yard.
It rose over the chimneys with the snow lifting behind it like ash, and the tail feathers streamed down the air long after the rest of it had gone. By morning the road was cleared to the village, the pump handle was scorched black, and a single feather lay in the drift by the step, stiff and tapering, dry as paper.
Nell took the feather inside and slipped it between the pages of the guest book, against the drawing, where the ink had kept its shape better than anything else in the house.
