Phoenix tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A phoenix with wings spread wide rises across the forearm, its head turned to the side with a crest of curled plumes. The wings and body are rendered in fine dark linework with soft grey shading, and the long tail breaks into ornamental scrolls that taper towards the wrist. The bird is set against a patterned fabric backdrop, and the image is in black and grey.

The net shed caught just after the fleet came in, and by the time you reached Gull Quay the tarred nets were roaring like sails in a gale. Men stood along the wall with buckets they had no hope of filling from the harbour. Your father was already in the wheelhouse of the Margaret Ann, shouting that the tide would not wait for sentiment, and you knew he meant the ledger in the loft, forty years of landings written in pencil by a grandmother nobody remembered being young.

You went up the ladder anyway. The heat shut your eyes to slits and the rungs burned through your boots. You found the ledger under a crate of corks, wrapped it inside your oilskin, and turned to climb down. Then the smoke tore open above the roof, and there it was: a bird as big as a boat, wings laid out wide over the sheds, head turned as if to watch the harbour, its long tail unspooling into scrolls of sparks that drifted slowly towards the water. Nobody on the quay was shouting now.
It circled once, slow as a gull over a shoal, then folded its wings and dropped through the smoke. Its heat rolled across the quay like an open oven door. When it touched the water the harbour went silver, thousands of herring breaking the surface in one bright shiver, and the wind swung round to fill the sails of the whole fleet. Your father stopped shouting. He just pointed.
You cast off at dawn with the ledger dry inside your coat and ash settling on the deck like grey snow. Behind you the shed stood as a black frame against the sky. Ahead, the gulls were already turning over the first shoal, and for the first time in a month the sea looked like it wanted to be fished.
