Phoenix rising across a back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A phoenix with wings spread wide sits across the upper back, its head raised and tail feathers flowing downwards in a long curving line. The wings and body are shaded with soft grey tones and fine feather detail, while the tail uses clean outlines with circular and swirl motifs. The composition follows the spine, with the bird at the shoulder blades and the tail ending near the lower back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Every winter my grandmother climbed the iron stairs of the Skerrow light with a flask of sloe gin and a grudge against the gulls, and every winter she told the same tale to whoever was daft enough to keep her company. Sit there, mind the wet on the lens. The bird you're thinking of came up out of the sea the year the lamp first burned, when the wreckers on Gannet Point were still hanging lanterns on the donkey to lure ships onto the rocks.

It rose with its wings spread wide over the water and its long tail trailing behind like a comet's ribbon, and where the feathers brushed the waves they turned to smoke and then to the little silver rings you still see on the lamp housing. Those rings are its eyes, she said, though nobody believed her but the fishermen's wives, who left bread on the step for it every Sunday.
The last keeper before my grandfather was a man called Tobias Penhale, who put out the light on a night of fog because the oil was low and his wife was dying in Padstow. He thought nothing of it until the morning, when he found a ship's bell in the surf with a single grey feather tied to its clapper. Three boats had gone down in that fog. Not one bell rang the warning. So the bird came back to ring it, the way it always does when a light goes dark that should have burned.
I never asked her whether she believed it. I only watched the beam sweep across the bay, and I counted the rings on the glass, and there were always the same number, one more than the night before.
