Phoenix tattoo on the thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A phoenix with outstretched wings and a long, flowing tail is tattooed on the outer thigh. The linework is soft and broken, with washes of red, orange and yellow that blend into one another and splash out around the wing tips. The bird is centred on the leg against a dark leather seat, with the tail feathers trailing down towards the knee.

The pot had cracked on the third stile, and Mabel Crane had to stop and blow on the coals until her cheeks ached. Behind her the valley was still dark, but ahead the chapel roof had caught the first grey light, and she knew the others would be waiting at the top of Scarrow Edge with their kindling dry and their tempers short.

The ember was older than the village. Her grandmother said it had come down off the moor after the great wind the year the mill burned, a single spark that would not go out however the rain came. Every spring someone carried it up to the stone ring, and every spring the fire took hold, and the old men swore the bird that lived in it had been seen once, rising red over the bracken with its tail trailing like a torn flag.

That morning the wool was soaked through and the base of the pot was cold. Mabel knelt in the heather, cupped her hands around what was left, and breathed slow, the way her grandmother had taught her, until a thread of orange crept up through the grey and licked the dry grass she had laid over it. The flame climbed and spread, and then it did something she had never seen. It lifted off the ground in a long, shivering curl and streamed upward, gold at the edges and red at the heart, and folded itself into wings above the ring.

The others came running up the path, shouting, and by the time they reached her the bird was only smoke and sparks drifting over the valley. Nobody argued about who had done it. Mabel tucked the empty pot under her arm and went home to sleep, because a fire that had flown once would not need carrying again for a long time.
