Piano keys and music staff on an upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, with a row of piano keys along the bottom and a curling ribbon of music staff and notes crossing the middle. Bare trees and soft clouds fill the background above the ribbon. The work is mostly fine black outline with light grey shading, and only a few piano keys are filled in solid black.

You are the one who keeps the organ in tune, which means you are the only person on the field who hears the wrong note before anyone else does. The fair pitches on the edge of Thornbury in October, when the sycamores have gone bare and the wind lifts the paper off the candyfloss stalls. Your uncle's barrel organ rides in the back of the lorry under a tarpaulin, and every night you lift its lid and count the pins like rosary beads.

Mr Dacre, who owns the Gallopers, pays you in cash and in gossip. He says a man from the council has been asking after the field, and that the old ground by the reservoir may be sold by spring. You nod and keep working, a tuning hammer in one hand and a paraffin lamp in the other. Only nine of the organ's ivory keys still sound true. The rest are dead wood, painted over by a dozen seasons of other people's fingers.

On the last night the clouds come down low over the ridge, and the paper music begins to unroll itself from the drum without anyone touching it. You play the waltz everyone asked for, the one with the flat in the middle, and the bare trees beyond the ground seem to lean closer to listen. Every note you sound is one of the nine you can trust, and the wind carries them further than the fairground ever could.

At dawn the lorries are gone and the grass is printed with wheel ruts. You find a single key in the mud, black lacquer cracked along the grain, and you put it in your coat pocket. Somewhere down the lane the organ is still playing, badly, and you can tell from the sound which note is yours.
