Pin-up profile with red bow on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a woman in profile, with a large dark hair silhouette, a red bow tied at the top of the head and a small red lip. The outlines are bold and the dark areas are solid black and dark grey with flat shading. Red is used sparingly for the bow and lips, against the black and grey of the hair and skin tone.

In Cwm Dulas the men went down before the light and came up after it, and the women kept the lamps trimmed on the kitchen tables. Nell Garrow kept the lamp-room at the top of Shaft Three, and she wore a red ribbon knotted high on her head. She tied it the same way each morning, twice round and a bow sitting over the crown like a bird on a fence.

The old people said the mountain liked a face it could not quite see. When the roof began to sing in the wet autumn of the great fall, the overman sent up the hill for Nell, because the men would not go in without her lamp. She walked the dark road with her face turned half away and her lips painted the colour of the ribbon, carrying the lamp low so the men saw only the shape of her head and the bright knot of cloth above it.
Down in the drift the water rose to the knee and the timber cracked like cold bread. Nell hung her lamp on the nail where the air was sweetest and walked the gallery calling names, one by one, until every man answered. The mountain, they said, followed the bow out of the level and did not look back, and nobody ever again saw that red below ground.
Nell was buried in the chapel yard with the ribbon still on. The boys who came up that winter swore a red thread drifted across the slag heaps at dusk, low and steady as a lamp being carried home.
