Now sit yourself down, our Dorothy, and mind the coal dust on the bench. You want to hear about the dance hall above the old store on Aldford Row, and I'll tell it the way my nan told it to me, with the kettle on and no interrupting.

The pit wheel had stopped for the strike, and that hall was the only light left burning after dark. Mrs Ivy Hallam ran it with a ledger, a tin of lavender talc and one rule: nobody danced with a man still smelling of the shift. So the lads washed in the tin bath, combed their hair flat with pomade and came up the stairs looking like they'd walked off a picture screen in Newcastle.

Then the roses started. Nobody knew who left the first one on the piano lid, a red bloom with its leaves still wet from the rain, and on the Monday another turned up hooked over the cloakroom peg. Ivy said it was a courting custom from the old country. Old Tommy Brack swore it was a pit ghost wanting a waltz.

Ivy took the one from the piano and tucked it behind her ear. She stood under the lamp with her chin up and her copper earring swinging, daring anyone to say a word. Nobody did. The band struck up, the floor filled with boots and borrowed shoes, and for one night the strike was a thing that only happened to other people.
