Pin-up woman with roses and a rat
Traditional · Neck · Colour · Flash
A painted illustration of a woman's head and shoulders with a dark bobbed hairstyle, two red roses with green leaves in her hair, and red lips and rosy cheeks. A grey rat sits at the lower left, and a double strand of black-outlined pearls hangs across the neck, where a teal filigree design is drawn. Bold black outlines and flat areas of colour sit against a plain off-white background, with the figure centred and filling most of the frame.

Mind the rat, she's sat on the good coil again, and you'll not shift her, for she was aboard before the paint on this cabin was dry. Hand me that pipe. Right. This is the tale of Ada Fennimore, who kept a tobacconist's on the Regent's Cut with a grey rat called Mrs Pell, and who would not sell a pipe to any man who had cheated at cards on the Thursday boat.

One wet March a stranger came in asking after a string of pearls that had gone missing from a barge called the Hesper. He had a voice like a bad tooth, and he laid a single pearl on the counter as a deposit. Ada held it up to the lamp and said it was paste, and he laughed, and she said the rat had nibbled the real ones off their thread years back. Mrs Pell came down from the rafters, sat up on the counter, and took that pearl in both paws the way a clerk counts coins.
The stranger went red, then white, and when he reached for the pearl Mrs Pell ran up his sleeve and out at the collar. Forty-one beads came rattling out of his coat lining after her, one by one, and she dropped each of them into the cash tin behind the counter. The constable counted them later, and not one was cracked. Ada gave him a pipe for his trouble and the rat a sardine for hers, and that was the end of it.
Now shift yourself, the kettle's boiled and the sardine tin is open.
