Pin-up woman with rose in hair flash

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A stylised drawing of a woman with a black bob, curled fringe and dark red lips, with a large red rose and green leaves beside her head. Her black collar is decorated with two small red flowers with green leaves. Bold black outlines, flat fills and a cream background give the design a classic painted look, and the colour is concentrated on the rose, flowers and cheeks.

The bus has stopped at the last hairpin below the col because the driver says the snow has come early, and you are the only passenger who has not complained. Outside, cloud sits on the road like wet wool. Someone has left a cardboard box of roses on the bench of the shelter, cut that morning in the valley, their heads already bruising at the edges. You take a red one and tuck it behind your ear the way your mother did before Sunday mass, because if the pass closes tonight you would at least like to look like someone expected.

The café at the summit is run by Marta Ferrante, who has a moustache, a radio that gets one station, and firm opinions about your shoes. She sets down coffee thick enough to stand a spoon in and tells you the road has been open since 1931 and has never once been open on time. You ask about the roses. She laughs and says the man who leaves them was a surveyor who drew this pass twice, once in ink and once in his head, and only one of the drawings was ever accurate.

Headlights swing up through the grey. The driver comes stamping in, and behind him, shaking snow from a battered hat, is a man with a pencil behind his ear and a rose-coloured stain on one cuff. He looks at the flower in your hair the way other men look at a map reference. Without a word he takes your ticket from the table, turns it over, and draws the road on the back in quick, confident lines, straight up the mountain and straight through it.

Marta reads the ticket over your shoulder and shrugs. "Well," she says, "he was always the optimist."
