Pin-up woman with roses and eyeball banner

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A drawing of a woman with set, curled hair, red lips and red streaks running from her eyes, drawn in a traditional style. Two blue roses sit below her, beside a pale eyeball with red veins, and a red banner carries the words 'I only have eyes for you...'. Bold black outlines and grey shading sit against a soft grey wash, with red drips along the lower edge.

Put the kettle on, Dolly, and leave the blue tray alone. That's Mr Pryce's left eye, and he's collecting it Friday or I'm selling it to the vicar's wife for a paperweight.

Forty years I've made eyes in this back room, and I've never had a man ask me for a colour he'd already lost. Pryce came in with a photograph of his wife, Evelyn, and a sprig of her hydrangeas pressed flat in a hymn book. He held the tray up to the window every Tuesday, squinting at my work the way you'd check a letter for spelling, and every Tuesday he said it was nearly her.

Evelyn came in on the last Tuesday in March. She didn't sit. She picked the eye off the tray, turned it under the lamp, and said, 'He'll only ever see the one of me, won't he.' Then she asked me to make a second, the same blue, with red threads through the white as though she'd been crying for a week, and she wanted it set in a box beside his wedding ring. I asked her why. She said so he'd have something to look at while she was away.

She went to Blackpool on the coach fare I'd given her for the second eye, and nobody has seen her since. Pryce still comes in Tuesdays. He sets his glass eye on the windowsill facing the street, where the light catches the blue, and he tells anyone who'll listen that it's nearly her. Put that tray down, Dolly. He'll be here at ten.
