Pine branch with cones on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A sprig of conifer foliage runs diagonally across the forearm, with two cones hanging from the branch on the left and right. The needles are outlined in fine black linework and shaded in dark grey, with muted green tones picked out along some of them. The top panel shows a smiling woman holding her arm out toward the camera, and the lower panel is a close, detailed view of the same tattoo.

The Big Wheel had lost a pin somewhere past Diss, and by four in the morning Vic and I were the only two awake on the frozen field, our hands black to the wrist, waiting for the lorry with the spare. Aunt Sorrel came out of her caravan in a wool coat over her nightdress and stood watching us with a mug of tea going cold between her palms.

She had a sprig of pine tied to her wing mirror, the needles gone silver with frost. Every winter she cut one from the last wood we stopped beside and carried it to the next ground. Two brown cones hung from it, one near the tip and one low on the bough, and she never let anyone touch them. 'A fair that carries a cone always finds its way back to the same field,' she said. 'That's what my mother told me, and she was usually right about things that didn't matter.'
Vic laughed, but she didn't. She snapped the lower cone from the branch, pressed it into my palm, and closed my fingers over it with a grip like a bailiff's. Then she nodded at the lorry lights coming up the lane. The replacement pin slid home first time, the wheel groaned once and turned, and the whole field rang with the old brass music.
I kept the cone in my coat pocket after that. Through eleven towns and one flooded car park, it knocked against my hip every time I climbed a ladder, and every time I put my hand to it I could smell the resin and the cold.
