Blackberry sprig on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A sprig of blackberries with several leaves runs diagonally across the inner forearm. The berries are filled with dense black shading and fine stippled texture, while the stems and leaf outlines use bold black linework with some leaves left partly open. The image is entirely black and grey against a plain light skin background, with the tattoo centred and fully in frame.

The frost has got into the top field gate again and I had to lift the latch with a kettle of hot water. It's bare now, every cane gone the colour of old rope, and the few leaves left have turned the red of Dad's Sunday coat.

I remembered last September, you standing on the milk crate with your sleeves shoved up, the juice running into the creases of your knuckles until they looked stained for a week. Mum made the jam in the big pan and it spat so badly she tied a tea towel over her hair. We opened the first jar at Christmas and it tasted of August, which you said was impossible in December, and then you ate three more slices of bread to prove it.
I've kept the last jar back. It's on the shelf above the Aga with your label still on it, 'Pump House, Sept', and I haven't opened it. Mr Hollis at the bottom farm says the Michaelmas business is nonsense, that the devil only spits on the fruit after the twenty-ninth, but I reckon the bushes know their own business better than he does.
So come home for the lambing, or before it, and bring your good boots. I'll show you where the biggest canes were. There are new shoots already, green at the tips, pushing straight out over the wire as if nothing has happened to them at all. Yours, Ellen.
