Pine cone on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pine cone is tattooed on the inner forearm, shown in close view against pale skin with a grey fabric sleeve at the top of the frame. The cone is drawn with dense, hatched linework and dark shading that gives the scales volume and texture. The image is in black ink and grey tones only, with a soft, neutral background.

Dear Tomas, the cones came down all at once this week, after three dry days with the wind coming over the Scarrow shoulder. I walked the lower track with the bucket, and every one I picked had shut its scales tight against the damp we had in June, so they looked like hand grenades, which is what Father called them when we were small. Turn one over in your palm and you can see how each scale hinges on its own little ridge, dark at the tip where the resin has dried and pale underneath like the belly of a trout.

The pass road closed at Michaelmas, and Hollins won't bring the carrier cart past the cattle grid now. Mother is wintering in the lower house with the Pruitt girls. I've been sleeping in the old hut to keep the stove going under the drying racks. Your initials are still cut into the beam by the door, though the roof has gone soft above them and the rain finds its way down the carving.

Last night I set one of the closed cones on the sill and sat up watching it. The cold came in through the gap under the shutter, and the scales lifted one by one, slow as a crowd turning round to see who has come in. By first light it had opened fully, and two winged seeds had dropped onto the boards like folded moths. I've wrapped the cone in brown paper and enclosed it with this. Don't be cross if the scales snap. Open it over the sink.

Plant the seeds in the north bed, where the frost lies longest. They need the cold before they'll take, same as the rest of us. Write when the post goes up. Your loving sister, Ada
