Conifer tree on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall conifer with a tapering crown and spreading roots is tattooed along the forearm. The branches are drawn with fine, feathery linework, while the trunk and roots are built up with stippled dotwork shading. The arm rests on grey pavement, with dark boots at the top left and green fern fronds at the right.

The frost had got into the top field again by the time Mrs Hebble came down the lane with the lantern, and she found her grandson already at the gate, his breath going up white. "It's leaning," he said. "The pine's leaning over the wall."

She went and looked. The pine was the one her grandfather had set the winter the well dried up, a slim young thing then, and now it stood taller than the barn. Its crown had thinned on the north side since the big wind, and the roots had pushed under the stones of the wall and lifted them like the knuckles of a sleeping hand. Every Candlemas the family poured the first milk of the year at its foot and said the names of the dead, the way it had always been done, and the old people said a tree that was fed would stand, and one that was forgotten would walk.
They dug that morning, the boy with the spade and her with the lantern hung on a fence post. Down under the roots they found the old well cover, rotten but whole, and beneath it the cold dark shine of water. The roots had gone straight down to it, feeling along the stone the way a blind man feels along a table. The boy wanted to cut the tree for a roof beam. She told him that a thing that found water for you in a dry year was not firewood.
By spring the lean had gone out of it, the wall was mended, and the boy stopped reaching for the saw. The lane smelt of resin all the way down to the road, and when the new branches came in soft and green along the trunk, he said the tree had only been stretching.
