Small fine line pine tree on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small pine tree with a straight central trunk and short, drooping branches tapering up to a point. The thin, even black linework is built from single strokes with no shading, and the design sits on smooth, pale skin. The simple composition is centred on a plain background, with the green fabric of a tank top framing the tattoo.

The tent came down in Carlisle in October, and the ringmaster, Tobias Crane, would not let the men burn the pine that stood beside the wagons. It was a small tree, no taller than a man's knee when they had dug it up in the Lakes, and it had grown in a tub through eleven towns. Nobody remembered why he kept it. The clowns said it was for luck. The strongman said it was for shade.

The old people say that when a show is dying it goes to the trees to be buried, and a pine is the one tree that keeps its green through the snow. So in the first hard frost Crane set the tub on the verge at the edge of the town, put his hat on his head, and walked away without looking back. The others followed him south in the rain, and nobody spoke about the tree again.
In April a girl from the nearest farm found a single trunk where the tub had been, pushed up through the cracked tarmac of the old fairground car park. Its branches came out short and drooping, one pair at a time, tapering up to a point, and its needles were so dark in the evening that they looked like ink. She climbed it because it was there.
From the top she could see the whole valley, the lights of the town coming on one by one, and the empty field where the big top had stood, bare as a plate.
