Pine forest wrapped around the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of tall pine trees rises from a dark band across the upper arm, with the tallest trees at the top and the forest softening into lighter grey mist toward the edge of the tattoo. The shading is smooth and tonal, with the trunks and branches rendered in dense black and fading grey washes. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred street and greenery background, and the person wears a coral striped tank top.

Dear Ruth,

The mist came up the valley again this morning before Lauds, and I stood at the gate with the bell rope in my hands and could not see the chapel roof. Only the pines, the first rank of them, black against the grey, and behind those a paler row, and behind that nothing at all. Brother Cuthbert says the wood is a sort of stair, each row taking the light from the one before, and that a man who wants to reach heaven must simply keep walking up it. I told him he was a poor botanist and a worse poet.
We are replanting the slope below the mill, where the fire took the old stand two summers past. Abbot Edric wanted the young trees set out in ranks like soldiers, but the ground would not have it. Where the roots ran deep the saplings grew straight; where the stones lay thick they leaned, and I have stopped trying to correct them. Yesterday I found one bent almost double and had half a mind to pull it, but it had found its own light, and it seemed a poor sort of mercy to deny it.
The bell rings in a quarter hour. I have marked the spot I would like planted when my own time comes, on the rise above the others where the mist thins first, and I have told Cuthbert he is not to argue about it. Tell Mother I have not forgotten her sampler, and that I think of the blue thread every time the sun goes down red over the ridge.
Your loving brother, Tobias
