Pine tree on a lower leg
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single black conifer tree with tiered, jagged branches and a thin vertical trunk is tattooed on the outer lower leg. The ink is solid black with rough, feathered edges and no shading, set against light skin with visible leg hair. The tree sits centrally in the frame on a plain, pale background.

Now, sit closer, because the wind off Scarrow Head takes the words straight out of an old man's mouth. There was one tree on that headland when I was your age, and only one. A Scots pine, thin as a broom handle, rooted in a crack of the north rock where the salt should have killed it. The keepers called it the Sentinel, and they tied their oilskins to its trunk when the fog came down thick enough to swallow the lamp.

My grandfather swore the pine came up the year the Mary Dunne went onto the Teeth. Nine souls lost, and a boy in a red scarf who washed ashore alive and never spoke again. Nobody planted anything on that rock. Yet every spring after, a new tier of green showed on the branches, one ring higher than the last, like a man climbing a ladder he cannot see the top of.
Then came the winter the lamp failed. Keeper Alder climbed the gallery in a gale with a candle in a jar, and every match he struck died in his fingers. He could see nothing below but black water. But he could see the pine, its tiers standing out sharp against the white spume like a cut-paper map, and he steered by the shape of it into the cove where the boats could land.
Ah, you're yawning. Good. There's no lesson in it, only the tree. It's still there if you walk the path past the wall and look down. It stands on its own now, and nobody needs to tie a coat to it.
