Black fern frond tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single fern frond runs vertically up the skin, with a thin central stem and pairs of small, evenly spaced leaflets that narrow toward the tip. The linework is fine and crisp, with some soft grey shading inside the leaflets to give them dimension. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits centred on the limb against a blurred, neutral background.

The fern has grown out of the mortar of the cistern wall again, and the overseer wants it pulled before the spring rains. You kneel on the wet stones with the iron hook and do not pull. Instead you count the leaflets as your grandmother taught you, pair by pair, narrowing toward the tip like the blade of a small knife. Eleven pairs, then the frond curls at its crown, still unopened, the colour of old bronze.

Your grandmother said a fern never flowers and makes no seed you can see, so people in the hills believed it kept its secrets in the dark underside of its leaves. She said the dust you find there ripens into something that can walk through a locked door unseen. You never believed her, but the dust is real enough to fill a pocket, and you have filled yours twice this week.
On the third morning the overseer comes down the steps with his ledger and finds you sitting against the cistern, the frond laid across your knees like a sleeping animal. He asks what you have been doing all this time. You tell him you have been learning the shape of something that was here before the walls, before the Temple, before anyone thought to count it. He writes nothing down. He sits beside you, and the water beneath the stones keeps its own slow count.
