Pine trees on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of tall conifer trees rises vertically along the forearm, with trunks and branches drawn in fine dark lines. Soft grey wash and smudged shading give the canopy a misty edge, and the lower trunks fade into lighter strokes. The piece is entirely black and grey against pale skin, with a blurred background behind the arm.

The third seedling had split its casing by the time Oriel Fenn stopped pretending the greenhouse was warm. Outside the glass, the sky over Harrow Ridge hung the colour of wet slate, and the dust storms that once came every few years now came every month. She had been told the pines would not survive the heat. The old survey maps still showed them as a dark thumbprint along the northern scarp, though nobody had walked there in forty years.

She carried the tray to the bench and checked the chart clipped beside the door, columns of dates in her grandmother's hand. Beneath them someone, perhaps her grandmother's teacher, had sketched the stand as it once was: tall trunks rising out of haze, branches thinning into pencil smudge, the lowest trunks dissolving into nothing at all. Oriel had copied that sketch so many times she could draw it blind. Lines like falling rain, she thought. Trees that stood in their own weather.

The seedling was no taller than her thumb. She pressed the soil around it with two fingers, the way she had been taught, and felt the cold coming up through the bench. Somewhere under the ridge, the old root-bank was still alive, or so the surveyors claimed. Nobody had proved it. Her grandmother had called it stubbornness. Oriel was beginning to think it was a kind of memory.

At dusk she carried the tray out to the north slope in the last wind-calm, set it in the shelter of a broken wall, and scratched the date onto a strip of tin. Below, the valley was grey with dust. Above, the first stars came through thin cloud, and for a moment the wall's shadow looked like a row of trunks, tall and faint, rising out of the haze as if they had never left.
