A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Cook Maud Pellow had already scrubbed the copper pans twice when the butterfly came in through the porthole, pink as a boiled prawn and twice as stubborn about leaving. The mate swore it was a moth. Maud said moths did not carry their wings like a sail in a fair wind, and she set a bowl of sugared water on the cutting board for it, because her mother had told her that was what you did for a visitor you did not understand.

It stayed three days. It drank from the bowl, sat on the spice rack among the cloves, and every evening spun a curl of thread from its tail the way she spun sugar for the pudding crust. The crew began to say the ship was lucky. The bosun said luck was a thing you paid for in lamp oil. Maud only noticed that the web pattern on its wings grew finer each morning, as if someone far off were mending it stitch by stitch.

On the fourth morning the sea was flat and grey and the galley hatch stood open. The butterfly lifted from the bowl, circled the stove once, then went out across the water toward a line of hills no one aboard had seen before. Maud wiped her hands and found a scrap of pink silk caught on the tongs, fine as a spider's thread.

That night she sewed it into the lining of her apron, and it is there still, though nobody aboard has ever asked her why.
