Tribal dragon with spread wings
Black and grey · Flash
A dragon with outstretched wings and a head turned upward is drawn in bold black outline on a plain white background. The linework is smooth and tapered, with the wing membranes, spines and body formed by sweeping curves and sharp points. The design is entirely black ink with no shading or colour, and the long serpentine tail curls down the centre of the composition.

The lamp had gone out at dusk, and by the time Ada reached the gallery the wind was pushing spray up the glass as if it wanted in. She knelt at the pedestal with the paraffin can, cursing the tin handle under her breath the way her father did when the boat was late.

Above her, the iron bracket her grandfather had welded to the rail threw its shadow across the lens. Black wings, sharp spines, and a long thin tail that ran down the brass. Her father used to say the sea knew that shape better than the charts. Skippers kept their bearing off it, the wings flaring out across the water whenever the beam swung round.
The wick took on the third match. She trimmed it, turned the mantle, and watched the light sweep out over the Harrow rocks. Nothing answered. Then, far out, a single lantern dipped, lifted, and dipped again, copying the pattern of the wings exactly as she had drawn it for him in the signal book.
Ada wiped her hands on her coat and leaned on the rail. Below, the boat's engine coughed and steadied. She pictured her father at the wheel reading the shadow the way he had taught her, and for the first time that night she didn't mind the cold.
