Pink fairytale castle on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A pink and teal castle with turrets, pennants and a small arched doorway fills the centre of the image, with a pale ribbon banner curling across its base. The linework is clean and the colour is soft, with lilac and teal shading on the towers and a lighter pink wash across the ribbon. The tattoo runs vertically up the leg, with the knee visible at the bottom of the frame and the rest of the person cropped out.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The castle stood on the back of the lorry all the way up the M6, its pennants snapping against the wind while your father swore at the gears. You were nine and sure that if you looked at it hard enough it would open its little arched door and let you in. Pink paint had flaked from its turrets in patches, and your mother had dabbed them back with a tin of teal from the Hartley Brothers shed, so by the time you reached the fairground in Doncaster it looked less like a toy and more like something that had been loved.

Every night the ribbon banner came down and was folded into a box marked SILK, and every morning the boy who helped with the rigging, Tomasz with the bent thumb, hung it back across the base and tied it off with a knot you never managed to copy. You asked him once what the castle was for. He shrugged and said it was for the ones who wanted to be somewhere else for four minutes at a time, which was the price of the ride, and that was all anyone needed to know.

The autumn the fair folded for good, your father drove the castle out to a field near Thorne and left it under a tarpaulin. You went back in November with a torch. The door was still there, pale under the grime, and when you pressed your palm to it the wood gave a little, like a held breath let go.

You drove home with the torch in your lap and didn't turn it on again.
