The glitter had gone sticky years ago, so when I gave the snow globe its first shake on my wedding morning, only a few pale flecks rose past the castle and settled on its pink turrets. Nan watched from the armchair by the window, her hat already pinned, and said that wasn't how snow was supposed to behave.

She had bought it in 1958 from a kiosk on the pier at Weston, the week after she and Grandad married. He had promised her a real castle on a hill in the Forest of Dean and never got round to it. "Three shillings," she told me, smoothing her skirt. "He'd paid for the train fare and I paid for the castle. Fair enough, I thought, we'd see the real one eventually."

Late in the evening my new wife lifted it and turned it upside down, and the glitter drifted over the castle in a slow, careful fall. Nan laughed from across the room, loud enough to make the vicar look up. "There," she said. "Now it's snowing properly."
