Rose and castle on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose fills the lower half of the image, with its petals shaded from pale highlights to deep grey. A castle with turrets and many windows rises behind the bloom, drawn in softer tones. The photograph is taken close up, showing the tattoo across the side of the thigh with the hands resting on the hip.

But a sweep's girl named Maud Tallow climbed the cold stairs one February with a bucket of ash on her hip and found the door unbarred. She set the bucket down. The rose leaned toward her the way a dog leans toward a hand, and she laughed, because nothing in that castle had ever leaned toward anybody. She told it about the miller's boy, the price of tallow, the crows that quarrelled over the kitchen midden. Every evening she came back with another piece of news, and every evening the bloom opened a little more, its outer petals curling back like the pages of a book nobody had dared to read.

When the king finally came up the stairs, bellowing for his ash-girl's head, he found her sitting on the sill with her feet tucked under her, and the rose had spread so wide it filled the window. He stopped in the doorway. The petals had gone soft and pink at their edges, the way the sky does just before the lamps are lit in the town below. He did not shout. He sat down on the cold floor beside her, and for the first time in twenty years the tower had two people in it who were not afraid of the dark.
