A single pink flamingo stands on one leg, drawn with a dark outline and soft pink shading on the wing and body. Mind the step there, it's been wet since Tuesday. Sit yourself down on that bench by the lych gate, the one the Aldous boys carved their initials into before the war took them. Now, the wedding at Hollin Farm was the talk of three parishes, and not for the cake. Mabel Crewe came up the lane in her mother's shoes, which were two sizes too large and purple as a bruise, and she walked the whole way from the bus stop on the bare heels of her stockings because she'd been told the chapel floor was flagged and cold.

The groom was Edwin Marsh, who kept the pond behind the mill and had never once in forty years been seen to hurry. He stood at the altar with his hands folded, and when Mabel reached him he looked down at her shoes and said, very gravely, that he'd heard there were flamingos on the reservoir at Carrow, and that a man could be forgiven for thinking a bride ought to have one about her.

She laughed so hard the vicar had to wait. Then she pulled up the hem of her frock and showed him the bird she'd had inked above her ankle the week before, pink as a boiled sweet, standing on one long leg as if the whole village were beneath its notice. Edwin bent and looked at it a good while. Then he said the vows with his face wet, which nobody had expected, least of all the vicar.

They still keep that bird on the reservoir, you know. Two of them, with a smaller one now. Go on, walk down to the water before the light goes. Watch the one standing on a single leg. It is never once in a hurry either.
