Ornate bow tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black ornamental bow with curled, scroll-like detail sits on the ankle and lower leg. The linework is dense and decorative, with the loops and tails filled in with fine swirls against the skin. The image is in black ink only, shown against a plain light background with black platform heels in the frame.

The loom on Halvard Ring hums at the same pitch as the cargo lift, so you stopped hearing either decades ago. Today the spool you need is the grey silk the dome gardeners cured in the old orchard, and the factor wants it knotted by dusk or the whole consignment goes out to the scrap tenders. You have three hours, a pair of tweezers and a hand that has started to shake again.

Start with the loops. Every bow your grandmother taught you begins with two loops that must match to a hair, then the tails, which curl back on themselves like the fern fronds that pushed through the hull plating in the first year. She swore the curls were there to catch the light from the viewports so a passing ship could see a kindness in the dark. You never believed her. You believe her a little now, watching the silk gleam under the lamp as you form the second swirl.
The factor arrives early, wearing his grey coat and the smile that never reaches his eyes. He turns the bow over, finds the knot, and says nothing for so long that you almost tell him the truth: that the knot is the only part your grandmother did not teach you. Instead you wait. At last he nods and presses a coin into your palm, warm from his pocket.
Afterwards you walk the long corridor to the viewport and tie a second bow, smaller, from the offcut in your apron. You fasten it to the rail where the ring turns slowly past the dark. Somewhere a ship you will never board sees a glint of silk and keeps on course.
