Blossom branch tattoo on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A foot wearing a lilac open-toe high-heeled shoe shows a tattoo of blossoms on thin brown-grey branches that wrap from the ankle across the top of the foot. The flowers are shaded in pink, mauve, violet and blue with soft gradients, and small buds are scattered along the branches. The composition is close and angled, with the colour ink dominating against the lighter skin and the shoe frames the lower part of the design.

Dearest Aunt Ruth, the snow has finally let go of the Kessel pass, and the carter from Lauterbrunn swears the first mule train will get through by Thursday, so you may stop writing to ask whether I have been eating properly. I have. Mostly bread and the smoked trout that Herr Lenz keeps in a barrel behind his stove, which is why I have chosen to stay on at the inn a little longer.

The real reason is the cherry tree at the top of the hairpin bend. It grows out of a wall of loose stones where nothing ought to grow, and it has been there, Marta says, since her grandmother was a girl. Marta is the one who keeps the goats and the grudges on this side of the pass. Last week she came down the track with a cutting wrapped in wet moss and pushed it into my hands without a word. Blossom first, she told me, then leaves, because a tree that tries to do both at once gets muddled.

The cutting did not take. I planted it anyway, in a cracked milk jug on the sill of my room, and forgot about it until this morning, when I found pale buds splitting along the thin grey branches. They open lighter than you would think, nearly white, then warm to pink over a day or two, and at the edges the petals take on a mauve bruise, and where they fold you can see a blue shadow, as if the light had been caught inside them. I have never seen a flower change its mind so slowly.

Marta's grandson came up the track yesterday with a surveyor and a man in a grey hat. They want the hillside for a new road. I did not say anything clever to them. I only stood in the doorway with the jug in my arms until they went away again. I am enclosing a single petal pressed flat between two pages of the timetable, so you can judge the colour for yourself. Do not let Mother fret. I will be home before the tree has finished.
