Pink flower vine on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A slender vine with black leaves, small black dots and clusters of pink five-petalled flowers climbs diagonally up the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, with solid black leaves and flat pink fills. The design sits against a pale skin tone with a window and outdoor background behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You reach the gate at Hollin Edge just as the mist lifts off the bracken, and the vine has already crossed the top bar in the night. Your uncle Teodor said to cut it back before the ground hardens, because nothing that climbs that fast ever stops at a gate. The secateurs have rusted at the hinge. You work them loose with your thumb and start at the root, where the stem is thin as a bootlace and the leaves are dark as wet slate.

The flowers are the trouble. Five pink petals each, paler at the centre, and they keep turning up along the stem as if they were posted there one at a time. Every cut releases a smell of cold honey. Behind you the village chimneys begin to smoke, and the baker's boy whistles on the lane. You think of the hard black seeds that cluster beneath each bloom, and how your grandmother kept acorns in a tin on the sill for winter.

Halfway up the post you stop. The vine has wound itself around the iron latch and threaded through the gap where the gate meets its stone, and two blooms have opened on the far side, facing the village rather than the wood. Somebody planted it, you think. Somebody who wanted a way out of the trees that didn't need a path.

You leave that length alone. You pick a seed from a dried pod, press it into the damp earth under the post, and wipe your hands on your coat. Teodor will shout. Let him. By spring the vine will have reached the lane, and you will walk the other way.
