Daisy tattoo on the wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A single daisy with eight white petals outlined in black, centred on a yellow disc. The linework is even and bold for its small size, and the petals are left mostly unshaded so they stay white against the skin. The flower sits alone in the middle of the frame on a pale forearm, with a pink checked fabric behind it.

The ovens were already warm when I came in at half four, and Auntie Maureen had her back to me, bent over the bench with a piping bag as if she were signing something. 'Don't touch the tray,' she said without turning round. 'Count the petals first.' I thought she meant the scones. She meant the buns.

Every bun that left the shop on Sunderland Road that spring had a daisy on top: eight white petals and a yellow boss of glacé icing in the middle. Maureen had learned it from her mother, who had learned it from a man who sold sugar at the market and never gave his name. The trick, she said, was the outline. Pipe the petals in plain white and they sink into the sponge like frost. Go round each one in a thin dark chocolate and they stand up on their own. 'Everything holds if you draw round it,' she said.

My first one wobbled. Petal five leaned into petal six as if they were gossiping. Maureen scraped it off with the flat of the knife, not unkindly, and handed me a clean spatula. By six the window had gone from black to the colour of weak tea, the first van was idling at the kerb, and I had done forty-two buns with petals that stood straight.

When the last tray went into the display, she tapped the glass with one knuckle, pointed at the flowers and said nothing at all. Outside, the pavement was filling with its first customers. I could see my own reflection among the daisies, grinning as though I had invented them.
