Cherry blossom and swirl on a wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised against a plain pink background, showing a dark ink tattoo on the inner wrist. The design is a cluster of cherry blossom flowers on a curling, scrolling stem, with a single character beneath. The linework is bold and even, and the ink is a single dark tone with no colour.

The Blossom Ballroom on Cutler Street smelled of floor polish and cheap gardenia spray, and the band had just started a slow foxtrot when you saw Auntie Lin's ledger skid off the cloakroom counter. You caught it before it hit the tiles, the way you had caught most things since the spring the hall flooded. Behind the counter, a paper cherry blossom pinned to the noticeboard had been curling at its edges for a month, and nobody had the heart to take it down.

Teodor, the Thursday tango man, came in from the rain with a cardboard box under his arm. Inside were forty paper fans of the sort the hall handed out at Lunar New Year, and a single stem of pressed blossom wrapped in tissue. He asked you to dance before he asked what the box was for. You told him the floor was for waltzes only, which was a lie, and he laughed as if he already knew.

You turned him in slow circles past the bandstand, the scrolled iron of the rail curling round the room like a wave that never quite broke. He told you the stem came from the old tree behind the chapel, the one the council meant to fell for the bypass. Every spring it dropped its petals across the car park, and every spring someone swept them into a bin. He wanted a few kept in a book before the saws arrived.

When the band packed up, you found the single character inked in the margin of the ledger, the same stroke you had seen on the fans, and understood that Lin had been saving the chapel's petals for years. You slid the last fan into your coat. Outside, blossom was already settling on the wet pavement, and for once you did not sweep it up.
