Pink hibiscus flowers with swirls on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

Three pink hibiscus flowers with shaded petals and yellow-tipped stamens sit in a diagonal cluster across the outer thigh, with dark green leaves around them. Black swirling vine linework extends from the top left and right edges of the design, and small highlights suggest droplets on the petals. The photo is taken from a side angle with a white top and shorts in frame and a warm indoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marisol had been told the hibiscus hedge along the palace wall would be cut down before the first frost, so she went out before dawn with a basket and a knife she was not supposed to own. The flowers opened pink as a struck match and were gone by dusk, which the court found vulgar and the gardeners found a nuisance. That morning she counted three blooms, each still beaded with dew at its throat.

The steward, Anselm Greaves, came down the terrace steps with his ledger under one arm. "Her Majesty requires the vines lifted from the east gate," he said. "They have begun to climb the sundial." Marisol did not look up. She was working the black tendrils loose from the stone, and they came away curling and reluctant, as if they had grown a habit of holding on. "They aren't climbing," she said. "They're looking for the light."

That night she set the blooms in a shallow dish of rainwater on the sill of the north tower, where the queen would never think to climb. Each petal held a single drop in its fold, and by moonrise the drops had gathered and rolled off one by one, like tears nobody had cried. In the morning the footmen found the east gate bare and the sundial clean. On Anselm's doorstep lay a basket of pink petals and a note in a gardener's hand: Keep the vines. They bring the bees.

The kingdom forgot the hedge within a generation. The swirls stayed on the wall, though, curling back towards the tower as if they had never once been told to let go.
