Watercolour flowers on the side ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large floral tattoo runs down the side of the torso, featuring a pink daisy-like bloom, two purple flowers and a pink tulip-shaped flower with green stems and leaves. The shading is soft and painterly, with translucent washes, darker edges and small splatter-like marks. The flowers are mostly pink and purple with green accents, set against pale skin and a white door in the background.

The officer at the Dover desk wanted to know why a grown man was carrying a biscuit tin full of dried paint. I told him it was my aunt's, and that she had painted the same three flowers every spring for forty years on the back of the kitchen calendar.

He lifted the lid. Inside, the pans were cracked and crumbled at the edges: a pink like boiled sweets, a purple worn down to a bruise, and a green so chewed by her thumb it had gone the colour of pond water. Under them lay a sheet of cartridge paper with a tulip on it, its petals bled out where she had dropped water onto them, small spatters like sand thrown at a window.
I had come to scatter her ashes near the chalk, but the form said to declare anything of personal value, and I had never declared anything in my life. He turned the paper over, read the blank side, then asked me to wait while he made a call. I sat on a plastic chair under a poster for holidays in Majorca and watched a lorry reverse, thinking how she never once painted a daisy without making it look as if it was about to say something rude.
When the supervisor came back he didn't mention duty. He wrote paint, personal on the form, slid it across, and said the sea air would have the colour off that paper in an afternoon, which was what she would have wanted. I let him believe that. The tulip is in my coat pocket now, folded in quarters, and the purple is already running.
