Pink peony in a triangle on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A pink peony in soft, shaded colour sits inside a bold black triangle outline on the forearm. Around it, grey dotwork petals, black filled leaves, and sprigs of berries spread outward, with a trailing stem of outlined leaves running down towards the wrist. The composition mixes realistic colour shading with stippled and black-and-grey botanical elements.

The cart came up the Sallow Road with the peonies packed in wet straw, and by the time the left wheel cracked at the ford half of them had already let their petals go into the mud. I caught what I could in my apron. Mother used to say a gardener who lets a bloom fall has stopped believing in the season, and I was not going to be the one who stopped.

In Ambrey, colour was a tax. The Lord Warden had decreed that only grey and black could be grown within the walls, since grey was honest and black was cheap to dye, and every bed inside the curtain wall was inspected each new moon by men with ledgers. A pink peony was a crime that smelt of summer. So I did what my grandmother taught me. I pinned the bloom inside a triangle of blackened hazel, the Warden's own sign, so that any inspector glancing over the fence would see only his emblem and the ghosts of grey petals I had pricked in with a bone needle. I wound the black leaves around the frame the way a hand closes over a coin.

The inspector came on the third morning. He counted the grey stems, licked his thumb, wrote nothing down, and stood so close to the frame that his shadow fell across the red without him seeing it. When he had gone, I knelt in the bed and followed the trailing stem with my fingers. It ran under the curtain wall and out towards the river gate, where the carts left each dawn, and by midsummer there was a pink peony nodding over a fence on the far side of the city too, a fence nobody had thought to paint.
