Peony bouquet with blueberries on an arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of large pink peonies, smaller buds and a rose-like bloom is tattooed on the inner upper arm, with dark blueberry sprigs and green leaves. The bold dark outlines and soft pink and peach shading give the flowers a dimensional, painterly look. The composition is a loose diagonal cluster that fills the frame, with the foliage anchoring the lower left.

Dear Tom, The peonies came up from Spalding on the 6.10 in a crate that smelt of wet cardboard, and I had them out on the stall before the porter finished his tea. They're the pale ones, the colour of the inside of a shell, and by nine they had opened so far that petals were slipping onto platform two. Mrs Gilroy from the signal box says I shouldn't sell anything that drops like that, but she bought three buds for her kitchen window anyway.

The blueberries are my own cheat. There's a hedge along the cutting past the level crossing where the birds have been at the fruit all summer, and I cut the dark sprigs with the kitchen scissors before the first train. Dad always said nobody buys a bouquet for the berries, but a man in a grey suit stopped on Tuesday and asked for only those, saying his mother had a hedge just like it on the Fens and he hadn't smelt it in twenty years.

On Thursday somebody left a bouquet on bench four, wrapped in brown paper with a card that said only For Margaret. I kept it behind the counter for two days in case the train came back for it. Nobody came. This morning I unwrapped it and found a single pink rosebud tucked under the paper with a timetable, the 14.22 to Peterborough circled in pencil.

I've put the bouquet in the window with a card of my own: Left on the platform, free to whoever is waiting. I've kept the last peony back for you, so mind the tide and write when you can. Love, Nell.
