Pink poppy tattoo on the hand
Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo
A large pink poppy with a yellow-centred seed head sits across the back of the hand and wrist, outlined in dark linework. Green shading surrounds the flower and softens into the skin, and fine black dots trace a loose arc around it. A small black linework motif sits on the fingers beside the flower.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The seed tin lived on the windowsill over the sink, its paper label gone the colour of weak tea, and in the last week of January my father wanted it opened. Frost had the top field locked hard, the furrows ridged white, and he said poppies sown into cold ground come up brazen in May. His own father had said the same thing, and nobody had ever checked.

So I took the tin across the yard with a dibber and a coat too thin for the weather. Along the hedge, where Mr Garvey's ditch ran down to our boundary and the two families had not spoken since his bull got through our gate, I pushed holes into the iron ground in a loose curve, one seed to each, the way you might trace the edge of a wreath. Every hole cost me a little skin off the knuckles. Garvey's boy came out of the byre with a fork and stood watching for a long time. Then he took the dibber without asking and started on the far side of the curve, so the two arcs met in the middle.
We didn't talk. We didn't need to. By the time the light went, the ring was closed, a circle of dark pinpricks in the white with nothing inside but more frost. My father said it would be a poor crop if the snow came hard. It came hard.
In May the poppies opened pink as the inside of a shell, papery heads nodding along the hedge, and every one of them stood on Garvey's side and ours at once. Nobody moved a fence. The boy brings the eggs round on Sundays now and leaves them on our step, which is what a neighbour should do.
