Pink ribbon and swirls on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A pink awareness ribbon sits on the top of a foot with black scrolling swirls curling out from either side. The ribbon is shaded with lighter highlights and darker folds, while the swirls are solid black linework with tapering ends. The composition runs diagonally across the foot towards the toes, and the skin around the design is in soft focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ribbon came down the Wenlow in April, snagged in a heron's nest of reeds below the mill, and Mrs Haddow saw it first because she was the only one in Coldharbour who walked the bank before breakfast. It was pink, the colour of cut rhubarb, and someone had wound it tight around a stick so the stick had split under the pressure.

She carried it home in her apron pocket and unwound it on the kitchen table, one turn at a time. Near the tail, where the satin had gone soft, a name was stitched in blue thread that the water had nearly taken. Tom, her husband, said to leave it on the weir for the river to settle its own accounts. Everyone in Coldharbour knew the rule about things found in water. You gave them back to whoever had lost them, or you kept them and paid the river a penny.

She didn't leave it on the weir. She took it to the church hall, where the women were mending the Whitsun banners, and laid it beside the hem of Edith Pell's christening gown, which had hung on the hall's nail for thirty years. The curls of blue thread along the gown matched the swirls on the tail of the ribbon, each loop tapering to a point like a fern unrolling in the damp.

Edith Pell's fingers stopped on the needle. "That was my sister's," she said. "I embroidered her name on the wrong ribbon and she cried for a week." Nobody asked what had happened after that. They pinned the ribbon to the notice board, and by midsummer people were bringing in the things they had lost to the water, a comb, a glove, a letter, and laying them beside it, so that the board looked like a map of the village's small losses, each one curled at the edge like something not yet finished.
