Nell Parkin had the banner across her knees on the Tuesday, the chapel light falling through the high window onto a field of maroon silk that smelled of camphor and old tobacco. The lodge wanted its flag cleaned before the gala, and the committee had asked her to add something new to the corner, a ribbon in lilac for the men who had gone quiet in the years after the last strike. She had drawn it three times on squared paper before she trusted the loops.

Her hands were slower than they had been. She used a single strand of thread, pulled it tight through the twill, and worked the top loop first so the tails could taper the way the pit ponies had leaned into their collars. Tom Ashby brought her tea in a jam jar and stood watching without saying anything, which was how he said most things.

"You've left one end open," he said at last.

"That's for whoever wants to finish it," she said. "Somebody always does."

He crouched beside her, the way he crouched at the cage gate before a shift, and rested a thumb on the loose silk. The colliery whistle went for the day shift, long and flat across the valley, and neither of them looked up.
