Feather, pink ribbon and birds on a side body

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a large grey feather with a pink ribbon curving around it, and a flock of small black birds flying off the feather's upper edge. The feather uses soft grey shading and fine highlight lines, while the ribbon is shaded in pink and red. The subject is centred on a skin-toned background with a dark, blurred area at the left edge.

Ada found the first feather on the third stair from the bottom, grey as wet slate and as long as her forearm. She picked it up before the breakfast gong, turned it against the window light, and slid it into her apron pocket beside the bread knife and the spare key. October at the Gull Rest always began like this, with the sea coming in grey and the lodgers coming down late.

Mr Reeve had arrived in September with one suitcase and a pink silk ribbon wound twice round his wrist, loose as a bandage that had lost its purpose. He paid by the week, took his tea black, and asked for nothing except that the window in Room Four stay open an inch. Ada kept it open. She didn't ask why anyone would want the cold in a room, and he didn't offer a reason.

On the fourth morning the feathers were on the landing, then on the sill, then in a scatter down the back steps towards the harbour wall. Ada counted them into a biscuit tin. Starlings lifted off the chimney pots each dawn in a loose black ribbon of their own, peeling away from the roof and spreading over the bay until they looked like ash blown out of a grate.

On the last Saturday his bed was stripped and the room smelt of nothing but lavender. Ada found the pink ribbon tied to the front gatepost in a neat bow, its ends lifting in the wind off the water. She left it there. Inside the tin she laid the feathers flat, grey ones uppermost, so they looked like the sky over the bay before rain, and she closed the lid.
