Pink ribbon forming a heart

Back · Colour · Photo

A pink ribbon loops around to form an open heart shape, with the ribbon's tail running diagonally down and off the frame. The ribbon has smooth gradients of pink and pale highlights, with darker grey-pink shading along the folds and underside. It sits on pale skin against a pink fabric backdrop at the top of the frame.

The function room at the Crown smells of carpet shampoo and sausage rolls, and somebody has pinned a banner reading Class of '94 with the 9 hanging loose. You spot Dawn Rimmer by the urn before she spots you. She still holds her car keys like a weapon. In Year Nine she swapped your geography homework for a packet of Refreshers, and she has never once apologised.

She steers you towards the fire door and pulls a length of satin ribbon from her coat pocket, pink and creased from years of being folded. "Remember the hair ribbons?" Every Friday in the sixth form common room you two tied the same ribbon round your wrists and passed it back and forth like a secret you were supposed to keep. She says she kept the piece that snapped. Now she wants you to hold one end while she loops the rest into a heart. Your fingers remember the knot before your head does.

For twenty minutes you trade the usual news: who married whom, who went to Leeds and came back, who ran the marathon in a Pikachu costume. Then Dawn admits the ribbon was never a love token at all. In 1992 she borrowed your bus fare for a bag of chips and never paid it back, and she has been carrying the debt in her pocket ever since. You laugh so hard the fire door bangs on its closer.

The heart holds for a moment between your hands under the green exit sign. Then Dawn lets go, and the tail slides off the edge of the step and down the car park, pink under the sodium lights, while you stand there with the loop still in your palm and the bus fare finally settled.
