Pink ribbon with angel wings

Colour · Flash

A pink line drawing shows a thin ribbon form rising from a point, with a pair of feathered angel wings spreading out on either side. The linework is loose and sketchy, with uneven strokes and scalloped feather edges. The whole design is drawn in a single shade of pink on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Win, The new lodger in number four has been up before the gulls every morning this week, tramping down the slipway with a canvas bag and a kite the colour of raspberry sherbet. He told me it was for his niece, who is stuck with her grandmother in Ulverston and cannot see the sea from there. I said the wind on our front was a poor teacher, and he laughed and said that was why the kite needed a long pink tail, to keep the wings honest.

Yesterday the wind got up to a proper gale and the kite went out over the bay like a bird that had made up its mind. Mr Haig ran along the groyne shouting, and I stood at the parlour window with the teapot going cold. He came back soaked to the knee, with nothing in his hands but the empty spool and a thin pink ribbon snapped clean at one end.

This morning I found the ribbon on our front gate, tied in a neat bow around the iron, with a note weighted under a pebble. It said: "Tell the sea it can keep the wings. The tail is for the boarding house." His train left at nine, and I did not see him go, only his bag wedged in the back of a carrier's cart.

I have not untied it. It lifts off the gatepost every time the wind comes in off the water and points back at the bay, as if it expects the rest of the kite to come home on its own.
