Tribal eagle with spread wings
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A bird of prey, likely an eagle, is shown in flight with both wings spread wide and its head turned to one side. The design uses bold, solid black tribal shapes with sharp tapered feather edges and no shading. It is a single-colour black design on a plain white background, with the body centred and the wings filling the frame.

Tuesday, 03:40. Ward 7 is quiet for once, so I'm writing this on the back of a drug chart because my notebook is in the locker. Mr Okonedo in bay two has finally stopped asking for his shoes. Kenneth on the switchboard says the helicopter is coming in from Scarborough with a fisherman who went over the side of a trawler, and he wants Bed 4 cleared before it lands.

The pad lights come up on the roof at ten to four, and I watch from the fire door with my cardigan pulled round me. The aircraft is black against the sodium orange, its wings painted in long tapered strokes that look like they were cut with a blade. The crew call it the Eagle because somebody in 1987 thought the name would sound brave on the radio. Dr Imelda Frayne runs out first, hair tied back with a bootlace, and the stretcher follows with two paramedics bent low under the rotor wash.
The man lives. His pulse goes thready, then steady, and by five he is swearing at the blood pressure cuff in a Hull accent that makes the trainee laugh for the first time since midnight. Imelda sits on the step outside with a flask and tells me the flight was forty minutes of nothing but sea and her own breathing. I tell her Ward 7 has been quiet, which is a lie, and she knows it.
At six the sky goes grey-blue over the car park. The Eagle lifts off again for Leeds, its shadow sliding across the bins and the smokers' bench, and for a moment the whole black shape hangs over the wall with its wings wide open. I write it down: 06:12, Eagle away, nobody lost. Then I put the pen in my pocket and go to see about breakfast.
