Black line heart design

Black and grey · Flash

A bold black outline of a heart with a notched top sits on a plain white background. Inside the heart, a second curving line forms a loop and a tapering stroke that suggests a stylised letter or ribbon. The image uses only black linework with no shading or colour, and the design is centred with generous white space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week of September the wasps have given up on the windfalls, and you are still walking the rows of Bramley with a bucket hooked over your wrist, counting what the wind took overnight. Old Mr Hollis at the gate calls it the tithe. You call it the sorting, and you have never once told him how much the difference matters to you.

The ribbon is the first thing you notice, not the apples. Faded red satin, knotted round the third bough of the eastern tree, where the bark has grown over an old cut. Two letters are scratched into the wood beneath the knot, one worn almost smooth. The loop hangs open at the bottom, like a line someone began and never finished.

You ask Hollis who tied it. He says the tree was a wedding present to his mother, and that a girl who picked here every August used to leave a bow at harvest, then stopped coming. He shrugs and goes back to his ladder. You stand under the branch with a cold apple in each hand until the light turns orange across the wet grass.

That evening you untie the satin carefully, fold it into your coat pocket, and walk the long way home, the bucket knocking your leg with each step. Halfway up the lane you take it out again and hold it to the last of the sun. The loop still wants a second line, so you find the stub of pencil you keep for counting, and you write the first thing that comes to mind.
