Pink rose inside a geometric diamond on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A pink peony or rose bloom sits inside an elongated diamond outline on the inner forearm, with a thin horizontal gap cutting across the middle of the design. The rose is shaded in pinks and purples with soft gradients, while the diamond is drawn in fine dark linework with a faint pink tint in its facets. The background is a pale surface covered in dark red rose heads and petals, with a hand raising a red rose above the wrist.

The crack ran clean across the blank the morning Mr Pell set it on my bench, and he told me not to waste the afternoon on it. Good crystal, he said, wrong nature. Someone had sealed a peony into the middle of it years back, petals and all, then left it in a damp drawer long enough for the seam to open. I had been at the trade eleven months and still thought a stone was just a stone.

I spent three evenings with a lap and a jar of water, grinding the blank into the long diamond the drawing called for. The pink of the flower showed through the facets like a bruise held up to a lamp, and each time the wheel came near the split, the two halves shifted a hair apart. Mr Pell watched from his stool and said nothing. On the fourth night he came in with a flask of tea and a loupe, and he looked at the seam for a long time.
Leave it, he said. Cut round it. A thing that has come apart and been kept together is worth more than a thing that never broke.
I left the gap open. When the stone went into its setting the following week, a thin line of daylight ran through the heart of the rose, and a customer asked if it was a fault. I told her it was the part that had been cut to fit. She laughed, paid in cash, and I kept thinking about that petal in its drawer for the rest of the winter.
