Aries symbol on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a cream crocheted blanket, holding pink and cream flowers, with a small black Aries ram symbol tattooed on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the tattoo is set low in the frame as a small focal point. The warm, soft tones of the photograph contrast with the crisp black ink.

Hester had cut the ram three times before Mr Gorse let it go to press. The horns had to curl like sprung wire, thin enough that the ink would not fill them in, and she had shaved the block until the two arcs met the stem with no more weight than a pen stroke. 'Farmers want something they can count on,' Gorse said, rubbing his thumb over the proof. 'A ram ought to look like it could butt a gate.'

She said nothing. She pressed a snapdragon from the windowsill between the sheets, the way she did with anything she liked, and when it came out brown and flat she tucked it into the margin of the sales ledger. The run was four hundred copies for the Thirsk fair, and the boy who carried the bundles down Finkle Street swore the ram was the finest thing in the book.
Then the lead plate for the March pages cracked in the damp, and Gorse had the frame reset by a man from Ripon who had never seen the drawing. He set the block the wrong way round. Every copy that went out that spring had a ram with its horns turned inward, curling like a question mark caught on its own tail.
Nobody complained. Hester heard that a carter pinned one above his stove, saying it was the first ram he had ever seen that looked like it was thinking. By midsummer the leftovers were wrapping cheese, and she found that the pressed snapdragon had left a brown ghost of itself on the ledger page, pointing the other way.
