Dear Tom, the rose on the north curtain wall has opened, though nobody has pruned it since the roof came down in February. I went up with the shears anyway, the way Father would have, and found the bud had already split its green sleeve. Two leaves stood either side of it like a pair of hands held up for a coin.

Mrs Ansty at the lodge says Lady Maud planted it the summer before the fire, from a cutting she carried home from Lisbon wrapped in a wet handkerchief. She told the gardeners the black in the petals came from ash, not ink, and they laughed at her. I have looked at it closely this week and I think she was right. The petals go from smoke at the rim to something nearly silver at the heart, as if the light has been folded up inside them and kept.

The stem runs down the stone for a long way, thinner than a bootlace. I followed it to the place where it disappears into a crack in the masonry, and there was a second bud there, small and tight, that I could not have seen from the path. I have not told the agent. He would only want to sell the stone for the walls of some new hotel.
