The last cutting from the old Duchess bush had to travel forty miles in a tin lined with wet flannel, and Ada Pennock held it on her knees the whole way on the carrier's cart. Every jolt over the Harl bridge made her count the buds under her breath. Four had survived the frost. Only one had opened properly.

Mr Hollis at Carrow Nursery took the tin without looking at her face. He said pink roses never took on briar stock in March, that the sap was too thin, that she should have waited for autumn. She told him the sap was thin in every rose she had ever known and they still managed. He grafted it anyway, binding the join with raffia while the kettle boiled in the potting shed, and he did not charge her for the knife.

By June the graft had thrown three shoots, dark and glossy, and a cabbage-pink bloom opened on the lowest one, full and crumpled at the edges like a letter read too many times. Ada did not sell it. She sent word to the rectory that the rose was ready, and on the Sunday after, the rector's widow came up the lane in black gloves to cut it herself.

Ada had kept the smaller bud back, tight and green-tipped, and she wrapped it in a handkerchief and put it in her coat. The widow asked for the bloom. Ada gave her the bloom. Walking home past the mill, she felt the bud knock softly against her ribs at every step, and she let it.
