Pink rose on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A pink rose in full bloom, with a smaller closed bud and several green leaves, sits on the upper shoulder of a woman wearing a white lace top. The rose is shaded in soft pinks and reds with fine detail, in a vintage botanical illustration style. The composition is cropped to the shoulder and neck against a plain pale background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The fair came to the valley the week the damson trees dropped their fruit, and it brought a man called Tobiah Frane with a cart of glass jars and a painted sign that read Roses Grown Under Glass. Nobody in Crossmoor had seen a rose out of season. The miller's wife paid a shilling for a single bloom and wore it in her hat to church until the petals went brown at the edges.

Mara Eland kept the goats on the hill, and behind her byre grew an old pink climber that flowered once a year and always too late. She watched the cart from the gate for three evenings. On the third she carried down a bucket of her own apples and asked what he would give for a rose that was not yet open.
Frane laughed and said he would give her a penny for the bud and a jar of salve for the bloom. She took the penny and the jar. Then she went home, cut the bush down to the root, wrapped the canes in wet sacking, and carried them to the fairground in the dark so the petals would not shake loose before morning.
By Sunday the fair had gone east, and the miller's wife's hat had gone limp. The jars on Frane's cart had all cracked in the heat. Mara's bush came back on its own in the autumn, red at the edges, with a smaller bud beside it that never opened. Her grandmother said a bud given away always stays a bud somewhere. Mara said she had the penny and the jar, and the rose was still on the hill, so she counted it a fair day's work.
