Pink rose tattoo on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows a large rose tattoo on a person's shoulder and upper back, with dark hair visible at the top left edge. The rose is rendered in soft pink tones with white highlights and shaded petals, giving it a dimensional, painterly look. The close, angled composition places the tattoo in the centre of the frame against a blurred room interior.

The flower van from Kent always came in at ten to four, and by half past I had the buckets lined along the kerb of Carrow Lane, the sodium lamps humming over the shutters. Most of the crate was the red that late-night couples wanted, tight and glossy. But that Tuesday there were pale pink roses too, their petals cupped as close as knuckles, and one stem I set aside because its outer petal had been split by the frost on the road.

Desmond Vail came every morning for a single stem and always asked for pink. Red, he told me once, was for people who had already made up their minds. He never looked at the buckets for long. He pointed, I cut, he paid in coins he counted twice. That Wednesday he didn't come, and I stood with my hands in my apron pockets watching the street fill with bin lorries and bakers' vans. When he finally arrived on Thursday, he stopped at the frosted stem I had been keeping back and touched the torn edge with one finger, as if checking it were real.
I offered to wrap him a better one. He shook his head and gave me the exact change. Walking off towards the river, he held the rose out from his coat so the damaged petal caught the lamplight. It was the colour of a healing graze, rose at the centre and paler towards the tear, and where the white showed through it looked like light coming up from underneath.
He came back the following week to say he had pressed it inside a timetable for the Harwich line. The stain had bled through three pages, and he showed me the faint pink shape on the paper, one petal lifted open like a door that would not quite shut.
