Pink rose with green leaves

Botanical · Colour · Photo

A pink rose in an outlined, partly open bloom sits above two green leaves with fine dark vein lines. Soft red and pink washes fill the petals, with grey shading inside the centre, and loose green and pink splashes spread beyond the outline. The rose is centred in the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of the swedes had gone soft in the clamp when Mab Ferris saw the rose on the north hedge. It was January, and the frost had lain on the yard for nine days. A single bloom stood where the old briar had been cut back in the autumn, its petals the pink of a cheek after the cold, and two green leaves held it up like open hands.

Her father said roses did not flower in the dark months and that it was the light on the frost, playing tricks. Mab said nothing. She took the stone jug down to the beck, broke the ice with the heel of her boot, and carried the water back without spilling, because her mother had taught her that what you carry in winter you must carry carefully. She set the jug at the root of the briar and went in to bank the fire.

The thaw came on the third morning, brown water over the lane and the ewes dropping their lambs in the wet. The rose had not gone. Its outer petals had softened at the edges and bled a little colour into the melt, and the green of its leaves had run down the stones of the wall like spilt paint. Her father stood at the gate with his cap in his hands for a long time before he put it back on.

"Leave the briar be," he said at last. "We'll not prune it this year." Mab picked up the jug, which was still full, and poured it out over the step for the sparrows.
